Recycling Facebook with EnviroCare

We just launched a cool new Facebook application for john st., the EnviroCare Profile Recycler. Just use a picture from one of your albums or upload a photo and the application remakes that picture using the pictures you’ve uploaded to Facebook in the past – like the photo above; essentially “recycling” your profile picture.

As more and more clients jump on the Facebook wagon, and by golly they are in droves, we should think of ways to make these applications awesome and not just Facebook applications for Facebook’s sake. Two things must be considered:

1. GOOD CREATIVE CONNECTION WITH THE PRODUCT

First and foremost, every idea regardless of medium needs to resonate with people and connect to the brand. You can have a neat idea for a Facebook application, but if it has nothing to do with your product or message it will only confuse people. The EnviroCare Profile Recycler is an application done right. It ties directly to the product in a simple, concise way. EnviroCare is a line of 100% recycled products that empowers people to make environmentally conscious choices. The app allows users to enjoy even more recycled goodness with a funky profile picture made up of their older pictures.

2. FACEBOOK INTEGRATION

Understanding the ways people use Facebook and leveraging this makes your applications much more effective. People go on Facebook to post pictures of themselves and to also look at pictures of their friends. When a really cool looking picture comes up and they find out there is a way to get one of their own, it’s great. It tags all of your friends who were in the past photos that make up your mosaic so they are all informed. It also allows people to “like” it and comment, which again shows up in home feeds and lets more people know about it. It’s super easy to do, people want to do it, and it gets shared on Facebook so it spreads naturally without ads.

The Envirocare Profile Recycler is a great and simple example of an application that just works. So many people use Facebook and the power to reach them and show them something cool is amazing. With several applications under our belt now we’re looking forward to the future of Facebook application ideas as creatives explore more and more ways for people to interact with their social network environments.

Try recycling your profile now.

Peanut Butter ‘n’ Jam

It’s not very often we talk about something technical in nature on the creative side of the Jam3 blog but today we wanted to talk a little bit about our very own content management solution for Flash and HTML web sites.

Most people are aware of the wonders of WordPress, the popularity of Drupal, and the extendability of Joomla, but what happens when your wrench, hammer and screwdriver don’t do what you need them to? We love WordPress especially, don’t get us wrong, but sometimes these solutions seem a bit like driving your car to get the end of your street.

For the last 3 years we’ve been continually expanding on our own CMS nick-named “Peanut Butter”. What makes it so special is that it is completely tailored to the content it manages. It does anything and everything that you would expect from a CMS: uploads images, edits rich-text, orders content, associates tags with items, manages users, publishes previews and writes XML. But the best part is that the codebase scales itself to do only what your custom web site needs quickly.

Many would take this for granted. Your CMS shouldn’t require training. It should just make sense and as a bonus it should look like it was designed just for you. You’ve just launched your new custom web experience and you need to control it. Et voila! a matching custom control panel without breaking the piggy bank.

Most people know us for the immense pride that we put into the front facing side of our work and for the backend this is no different. DDB’s brand new site is a wonderful example and a testament to its power and scalability.

Video Production Funtimes for Nurun with Clayton Hamner

We recently produced a series of  live illustration videos shot right here at Jam3 studios on one of our massive 30 ft. white board walls. The videos were created for Nurun and feature the stylings of Toronto based illustrator and artist Clayton Hanmer. Nurun is a rad digital agency and it has been a very fun experience working with them, the illustrator and our camera crew. They look superb integrated into their site. With my background as a producer in both video and digital realms, I’m excited about more projects like this one incorporating multimedia on the horizon.

The other 2 videos:
Nurun: Who we are.
Nurun: How we work

DDB Canada’s brand spankin’ new FWA winnin’ website

DDB Canada website screenshot
We worked with the fellas over at Tribal DDB Vancouver to make DDB Canada’s website. If that wasn’t exciting enough, today it is also site of the day over at FWA.

I admire and love the fact that DDB did not follow the current trend and create a simple HTML blog styled agency site. The site is proof that you can be content rich and very UI friendly whilst being built in Flash framework that features some slick animation. The haters may bring up points about HTML5, but those savvy enough know that the site could not have had the same level of detail if that route were taken.

DDBcanada.com has content galore and features a lot of nifty little javascript tricks that work in tandem with Flash to provide a very natural user experience. Flash pages seamlessly expand and contract to reduce the needs of Flash scrollbars giving the user an HTML feel for text heavy pages. Twitter feeds and tags are directly pulled into the site and visitors also never have to leave the page to view the company blog as this one is incorporated right into the site and allows for the embedding of images, pdf’s and even Vimeo and YouTube clips right into this Flashtastic agency site. On top of that, this site is built using Jam3′s very own content management system that allows the nice folks at DDB to edit any and every last pixel of their site.

Is there anything sweeter than a lil’ PB & J? Check it out DDBcanada.com
